Green Options Buffalo Promotes Bike to Work Week: Teams up with local business leaders to advance the benefits of bicycling

Buffalo, NY - Green Options Buffalo is encouraging Western New Yorkers to pledge to leave their keys at home and grab their bicycle to travel to work May 16th – 22nd during National Bike to Work Week.

The week will begin 12:30pm on Sunday with the Blessing of the Bikes at the Lafayette Presbyterian Church. The blessing is open to people of any or no belief and all are encouraged, invited and allowed to wear their cycling gear and bring their bike into church.

“We are simply doing our part to encourage cycling and bless bicyclists in our community for their safe travel,” said the pastor, Reverend Drew Ludwig.

Justin Booth, Executive Director of Green Options Buffalo said the bicycle offers so many advantages.

“Bicycling is a great way to experience your community and an easy, healthy and environmentally friendly option we could all choose to do more often,” Booth said.

To show just how easy it is, each day throughout the work week a prominent business leader in our community will ride to work touting the benefits and ease of bicycling, while encouraging its use as a part of their daily routine.

"Cycling is a great way to get in shape and as a low impact activity most people can incorporate it into their daily lives”, said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., president and CEO, Independent Health. “There are also many health benefits for people, of all ages, who ride a bicycle regularly, including reduced risk of coronary heart disease, stroke, other chronic diseases, and improved quality of life."

Warren Colville, President of the Buffalo News said he is riding his bicycle for some of the environmental benefits too.

“A short, four-mile round trip keeps about 15 pounds of pollutants out of the air we breathe,” he said. “With motor vehicle emissions representing 31 percent of our collective total carbon emissions, switching motor vehicle trips over to bicycle trips is an easy way to reduce energy needs and pollution emissions from the transportation sector creating a better environment for us all.”

On Thursday May 20th from 8-10pm cyclists will “Merge into the Bike Lane” to celebrate Bike to Work Week at Merge Restaurant (493 Delaware Ave.). Half off admission for those who ride their bicycle; a free bicycle valet will be available to park the bikes.

There is no better time then now to get your bike ready for summer and participate in Bike to Work Week. Visit www.greenoptionsbuffalo.org to sign the pledge and learn how to get started.
