On Friday, May 30th, several participating Buffalo Common Council Members will be commuting to work by bicycle to publicly announce recently passed legislation aimed to increase the bicycle and pedestrian friendliness of our city and challenging the citizens of Buffalo to reduce our carbon footprint.

May is National Bike Month. All across the country, people have been responding to the increasing awareness of the negative impact we have had on our environment by making more ecologically sustainable transportation choices. By walking, taking public transportation, carpooling and bicycling for more or all of our daily commutes, Americans are making transportation choices that are friendly towards the Earth, while improving their health and saving on gasoline.

The Buffalo Common Council has placed itself on the cutting edge of this national movement by passing the Complete Streets Policy. Complete Streets works to ensure that when a roadway is constructed or repaired in the City of Buffalo, equal consideration is given to commuters of all kinds – including bicyclists, pedestrians, public transportation users, children, people pushing baby strollers and the disabled. Citizens of buffalo will see the effects of this policy in the form of improved sidewalks, crosswalks, curb cuts, bicycle lanes, bicycle racks, increased signs and other safety facilities.

Buffalo Common Council Members are announcing the passage of this legislation and challenging our citizens to reduce our carbon footprint through commuting to work by bicycle on Friday, May 30th. Participating Council Members will ride bicycles from their homes and arrive at Lafayette Square at 9am. Once gathered, they will ride as a group to Niagara Square where council members will join Green Options Buffalo to publicly announce the Complete Streets Policy.
